Fiction e-Book-of-the-Month, October 2000. STEPHEN KING'S NEW SERIAL E-NOVEL is a landmark in electronic publishing. His earlier book Riding the Bullet made publishing history by being the first e-book by a major author to be released exclusively in e-book format. Over the space of a few days, a record 600,000 readers downloaded the book, and the e-publishing revolution was on. Bouyed by this success, King embarked on a new project, designed to test new marketing models on the Internet. For this, King reached back into earlier days for The Plant, a horrific thriller with masterful touches of comedy - reminiscent of Christine, and structured it as a serial novel. In sections several thousand words long, King unleashed this work again exclusively as an e-book, with a twist: readers could download the book for free, but are expected to pay around a nominal fee per installment, based purely on the honor system. If enough users paid, the story continued - if not, King pulled the plug... And users seem to be playing the game. King has recently released the third installment of the serial horror novel - in Palm format as well as in other more conventional formats - in a saga that promises to engender another revolution in the e-book industry.
